Château Haut Garrigue, France – Seán & Caroline Feely

January 30, 2012

Why do you make wine?

We love our metier. This is our passion and our life. It is very hard work but extremely fulfilling.

Why do you choose to do it the way you do?

Once you begin to understand biodynamics it is clear that it is the only way to farm. It is so logical and eco-logical. It is right for us, for our vines, for our wines. Like winegrowing and winemaking it is our life’s work to understand it, use it and help others to understand it.

What obstacles have you overcome?

Mice, men and money.

What disasters have you survived?

There are four well-known winegrower killers and one of them is machinery. In our first year Seán had 2 farm accidents that put him in hospital and out of action for a few weeks. We were lucky; within a 5km radius of our farm 3 winegrowers have died in the last 4 years (two from asphyxiation by carbon dioxide and one from falling off a vat). This profession is not for the fainthearted.

Are you happy with your work?

We are never totally happy, we are always striving to be better, but we can see the benefits of the way we farm in the soil structure and in the wines themselves, so yes, we are happy with the work that we are doing.

Is it worth the effort?

Yes – we know what we are doing is right, there is harmony in our vineyards and the taste of our wines speaks for itself.

Seán Feely
