Burnside Bungalows, Australia – Lara and Jamie McCall

Lara and Jamie

Why do you do what you do?

The most satisfying thing in life is growing your own food.

Why do you choose to do it the way you do?

It really is just common sense and the way people have been farming forever. Animals are an important part of our farming systems.

We are self sufficient in meat (pork, beef, lamb and chicken), vegetables, fruit and eggs and we are very fortunate to have a source of fresh local raw milk that we make into cheese, yogurt and kefir. We keep chickens, sheep, cows and pigs for meat. We process them for our own consumption. Our philosophy about food is based on unprocessed nutritionally dense food. We also make sourdough and ferment grains in whey before cooking. Our own honey replaces sugar.

What obstacles/disasters have you overcome?

Kangaroos love grape vines and South African black beetles love grape vine roots.

We started again with a kangaroo proof fence.  The black beetle damage meant we had to replant about 1/4 of the vineyard each year.

Is all the work worth the effort?

Drinking wine, grown and made by us on site, is very satisfying.
