Good Neighbor Organic Vineyard and Winery, Michigan – Stan Silverman

February 6, 2012

Why do you do what you do?

My goal was to prove we could grow grapes organically in this region (Traverse City, Michigan) and produce quality organic wines.

Why do you choose to do it the way you do?

I grew up in the 60s when we focused on the environment a little more and began to understand that we were borrowing the land and needed much better stewardship.

What obstacles have you overcome?

The same as any grower, but with the addition that we are really the first totally organic wine producer in the area. Our biggest issue is the TTB and label reviews! I can deal with the Bugs not the Bureaucracy.

What disasters have you survived?

Daily life.

Are you happy with your work?

Most of the time (know anyone who wants to buy an organic winery?)

Is it worth the effort?

Yes and No: It is worth it to try to show others an alternative and to create products people enjoy. The “no” stems from the fact that the work load is too much and the cost of labor too high given our small size.
