Lowe Family Wine Co., Australia – David Lowe

April 1, 2012

Why do you do what you do?  Always to make better wine. Organics gives me better wine. I am convinced of that.

How do you do it?  There is no manual that tells you what to do. You need to use all your technical ability, plus practical knowledge to develop your own system. It was a very stimulating experience, and very expensive due to regular crop failures while testing new systems.

What obstacles have you overcome?  Drought, plague locusts, massive rain events, neighbors who do not have a duty of care.  There is increasing awareness of organics, but precious little advocacy, or marketing by the organizations. It is always left to the producers to market and mostly they are poorly resourced.

Are you happy with your work?  I will not change back, but I may have to return some of the farmland to conventional farming because of major weed infestations.

Is it worth the effort?  I would struggle to recommend it to anyone starting out, unless they had deep pockets, huge resources and massive experience.
