Silver Thread Vineyard, New York – Paul and Shannon Brock

May 22, 2012

Silver Thread is a 10-acre, sustainably farmed vineyard that was established in 1982 on the east side of Seneca Lake, and the estate winery has been in operation since 1991. The winery produces small quantities of premium wines, including Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Gewurztraminer and Cabernet Franc.

Why do you do what you do?  Wine is something lasting, that if made well can be enjoyed for generations.  We have a unique terroir in the Finger Lakes region of New York that we try to express through our sustainably grown wines.

How do you do it?  We use sustainable practices in our vineyard, winery and sales.  We use cultivation instead of herbicides and fungicide sprays that will not accumulate in the ground or water.  In our winery, we use earth-friendly cleaning products for our tanks and natural temperature control for winemaking.  Our wines are bottled in lightweight glass bottles that take less energy to make and transport.

What obstacles have you overcome? The Finger Lakes climate is humid with variable weather each year.  We are always at the mercy of the elements, but amazingly, the grapes turn out well year after year.

Are you happy with this work? It is immensely fulfilling to create something that makes people happy and helps them connect with the land.

Is it worth the effort? Unquestionably!
